A frog in the throat?

Collette turned up at DJ’s Electric Motor and Pump Centre one morning last week. In her hands was a Grundfos pump used for pumping from the household tank to the toilets and laundry.

It was a multistage pump, which meant it provided really good pressure for the house, and being Grundfos, it was very good quality! But it wasn’t pumping water for the toilets or laundry as it had been. That was a problem. She came because we are really good with service and repairs and can fix pump problems.

Because it was for household water supply it went straight to the top of the list for resurrection.

Michael, one of our in-house service techs tested it and pulled it down. And that’s where he found the problem. A frog was stuck in the impeller, and unfortunately for the frog it was deceased. Not so the pump! With a little of DJ’s magic, the remains of the frog were removed. The rest of the pump was thoroughly checked and tested, and Michael replaced a seal which was showing signs of wear. All done before lunch time.

In discussions with Collette, we also supplied some new suction hose and fittings to make the installation a lot better.

Result? Happy Collette; she had a fully functioning quality pump back in operation to flush and wash with abandon. Satisfied DJ’s; we were able to make another customer very happy with our service and care!

Solar Pump Project

When Justin needed help with his irrigation project, he knew that DJ’s Electric Motor and Pump Centre would be able to help – DJ’s had provided great service on previous jobs.

The problem was to pump from a dam with a pipe run of almost a kilometer and 130 meters of static head height. That’s a lot of friction loss to overcome! And still the need for some water at the end. The water was to irrigate five sectors of fruit groves and fill several tanks.

The solution was to install a solar pump (because of distance from power and the for long-term economy). Because of the total head required (including distance and physical height) we chose to use a submersible borehole pump in a shroud and mount it under a float. This solution was the most economical, providing high pressure and good flow. The products used were  a Bianco Solar array consisting of 10 x 315 watt panels and a DAB S4C39SOL solar borehole pump with a 200m head and a max flow of 70 lpm.

Other equipment needed for the job included the Icon Solar Controller, pressure switches and float valves for the tank filling. We also supplied backup units including a Westinghouse 8.5kva generator and an Onga Blaze firefighter pump for transfer from one dam to the other.

Despite the challenges of installing the pump using existing lines in poor condition and the nature of the terrain, the installation ticked all the boxes that Justins had requested. He now has a reliable source of water with negligible running costs due to the solar power to irrigate the existing, and yet to be planted, fruit trees.

Pool Pump Servicing – It Is Time!

Why Servicing Your Pool Pump Is Important.

In order to keep your water fresh, clean and hygienic your most important piece of equipment needs to be fully functioning.  Without your pump the water becomes stagnant and bacteria starts to settle and grow.  Once the pool water is out of balance it can take weeks to clean and return to safe levels of cleanliness ready for swimming.

Parts in the pumps can become worn over time such as the bearings, o-rings, seals and the housing unit.  If these parts are not maintained the pump begins to leak and make excessive noise and can over heat leading to sort circuiting or other problems.

Davey Handover Kit

Things you can do at home.

Regularly cleaning the pump strainer, checking equipment.  While the pump is running take the time to check for leaks and listen for unusual sounds. Keeping the pool free from large debris (such as leaves and sticks) can also help in the longevity of your pump – these items can sometimes get stuck in the impeller causing low effectiveness. Not maintaining your pump can lead to expensive repairs.

Weed Problems

After the recent rains, I have had a profusion of weeds sprouting. While mechanical removal is probably the best way of weed removal, sometimes you need to use garden chemicals to deal with the problem. I use them as required to deal with weeds that are not easy to physically remove.

Glypho 360 Green is an indiscriminate weedkiller and is used where you want to kill off all the weeds in an area, for example weeds and grasses that are coming up through mulch or under fences.

The Ravage or Dicamba is a selective weedkiller and is particularly useful in tackling broadleaf weeds in lawns.

If used carefully, these garden sprays are safe to use. We have some safety directions down the bottom of the page. Also remember not to spray when it is windy as some of the spray may drift onto desirable plants.

Call us if you need more helpful information on these products.

Glypho weed spray

Low-toxic aquatic, water-soluble herbicide for non-selective control of many annual and perennial weeds in certain situations as shown in the directions for use table.

Green is a highly concentrated weed killer used to kill all unwanted common weeds and grasses anywhere in the home garden. Glyphosate Green 360 – unlike Ravage, is not selective so may kill plants etc if they are sprayed. Glyphosate Green 360 is also effective in killing woody weeds.

It is available in 1litre,5 litre and 20 litre packs

Ravage Dicamba MCPA

Got a problem with broadleaf weeds in your lawn. The answer is the tried and tested Ravage.

Ravage is sometimes known as Dicamba. It is a selective weedkiller meaning it doesn’t affect your lawn grasses, only the broadleaf weeds.
